Abstract

Jatropha curcas is an irritant plant, which is commonly grown in many parts of India, as its oil is useful in the manufacture of biodiesel.

Accidental poisoning with jatropha is not infrequently encountered, especially among children who may bite on the fruits on account of their attractive appearance. Even though diagnosis and management may not pose problems in most cases, there is a general lack of awareness among the medical professionals about its potential for toxicity.

The case being reported involved accidental poisoning of seventeen children who consumed the fruits of Jatropha, mistaking them for edible fruits.
