Agriculture is one of the major sectors contributing towards national Income and livelihood therefore, its growth is crucial. The contribution of agriculture has decreased over the last few years which is a source of concern and needs appropriate study. It was in 1966–67 that a new agricultural strategy called High Yielding Varieties Programme (HYVP), popularly known as Green Revolution was put into practice to tide over the chronic shortage of food grains in the country. In the present study we examine the trends in agricultural output over the last 35 years. The main objectives of the study are to analyze the behavior of agricultural output considering the structural changes which have occurred during the period. Additionally, the study makes an attempt to understand the pattern of agricultural output growth in conjunction with the agricultural credit in India over the years under study to help identify the future priorities and policies.
