With a view to assess extent, distribution and trend in global poverty, World Bank had introduced the concept of an International Poverty Line (IPL), starting with the “$1-a-day” in 1985. Their latest results regarding poverty numbers, based on 2005 Purchasing Power Parities, have generated quite a lot of polemics, particularly when these are compared with the numbers obtained on the basis of 1993 PPPs. This paper brings forward the issues underlying the IPL.
