Abstract

Contrary to the perception that Bihar's economy started surging only recently in the last couple of years, we found that Bihar's economy had been on an uptrend since 1996–97. This, however, does not undermine the fact that State's growth has accelerated markedly since 2006–07. Furthermore, unlike the prevailing opinion of Bihar's growth being construction-led, we found that major impetus to Bihar's economic growth in recent years (2006–07 to 2012–13) has been provided by ‘trade, hotels and restaurants ‘and ‘agriculture and allied activities ’. On the whole, present growth momentum of Bihar, at best, might have just wiped out the hangover of past development deficit to some extent. There is a need to sustain this tempo so that the State catches-up with other relatively developed states.
