The paper attempts to examine the consistency between the results of the process of identifying people below poverty line using scores on degree of deprivation in respect of various parameters, fixed by the Government and the Poverty Line estimated by the Planning Commission. While analysing this consistency, it has been found that rise in wages of casual labourers have pushed their MPCEs upward and a major chunk of the weaker section of the society has crossed the Poverty Line.
