India with numerous agro-climatic zones provides great opportunity to grow a variety of crops. It has great potential to be the growth engine of the agriculture and allied sector but that is only possible if we could know its actual value addition in the economy. Though Central Statistics Office publishes state-and crop-wise value of outputs, yet the crop-wise value addition is missing. The paper attempts to estimate gross value addition of major crops using Cost of Cultivation Studies data. This would help in policy intervention to improve the productivity and value addition so that we can achieve the goal of doubling the farmers’ income by 2022.
