Library Professionals’ Awareness and usage of MOOCs for Continuous Professional Development and Workplace Learning at Universities in Kogi State, Nigeria

In the twenty-first century, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are gaining popularity and have started a new global trend in academic programme enrolment. MOOCs are online resources that provide participants with cost-free instruction. However, the usage and awareness of it among librarians in the Nigerian state of Kogi have not been taken into account. This study investigated the familiarity and application of MOOCs among library workers. The study adopted descriptive survey design and a self-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The study was carried out in Universities in Kogi State with a total of 128 library professionals as the population. Descriptive statistics, such as frequency counts, percentages, graphs, and tables, were used to analyze the collected data. The results showed that MOOC adoption is still in its infancy and that this is due to a lack of knowledge and a weak internet connectivity infrastructure. The study suggests that professional organisations like the Nigerian Library Association and the Librarian Registration Council of Nigeria step up their efforts to raise member awareness of the advantages of MOOCs. In addition, the study provides fresh data on awareness and usage of Massive Open Online Courses among library professionals in Nigeria.
