The influence of artificial intelligence on Indian libraries: Perspectives and opportunities from library professionals

This research investigates the viewpoints of Indian library professionals regarding the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in library settings. The objective is to gain insights into their knowledge, awareness, and opinions on AI, along with the associated challenges and opportunities. Employing a quantitative methodology, the study utilizes a closed-ended survey to gather data from 282 library professionals working in academic institutions throughout India. The survey encompasses a range of topics, including socio-demographic details, familiarity with AI, attitudes toward AI in libraries, ethical implications, and the adoption of AI tools and services. The results reveal that Indian library professionals generally possess a good understanding of AI and recognize its potential advantages for libraries. They assert that AI can enhance library operations, increase accessibility, and aid i n decision-making processes. Nonetheless, there are apprehensions regarding the possibility of AI supplanting human intelligence in library environments. Key considerations for the successful implementation of AI applications include user privacy, funding, staff expertise, and alignment with institutional objectives. Additionally, ethical issues such as bias and discrimination, intellectual freedom, and transparency are prominent concerns. Technologies like smart shelving and optical character recognition have already been integrated into some Indian libraries.
