Web Competency of Library and Information Science Students in Universities in Kerala

The purpose of this study was to assess the web competency of the Library and Information Science students in universities in Kerala. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data from a representative sample of 132 students. The analysis revealed that a majority of the students are aware of the web applications and used mainly for learning. Social networking sites and wikis are the most widely used web applications. Majority of the students always use simple search methods for accessing the web. Google is the most preferred search engine followed by Yahoo. Majority of the students use WebOPAC and e-journals. Cost to access the Internet, infrastructural facilities and currency of information are the major reasons of the underutilization of the web applications.
