Transforming library automation: Insights from academic librarians in India on transitioning to Koha

This research article investigates the adoption of Koha, an open-source integrated library management system, from the perspective of librarians. The study examines various aspects, including first impressions, adoption motivations, general satisfaction, ease of use, challenges with implementation, and a comparison with earlier software. Quantitative data were collected from 62 librarians who migrated to Koha, revealing insights into their demographics, perceptions, reasons for adoption, and challenges faced. The findings indicate a high level of agreement among librarians on the benefits of Koha, such as its open-source nature, constant upgrades, and flexibility. While satisfaction levels are generally positive, challenges like inadequate training and difficulties using specific modules are acknowledged. The study also compares the efficiency of Koha modules with previous software, shedding light on specific areas where Koha excels. Overall, the research contributes valuable insights for libraries considering Koha adoption and emphasises the importance of understanding the real-world experiences of librarians in navigating the evolving arena of information management.
