Navigating financial waters: The economic realities of modern libraries and their role in access to information

Libraries have historically functioned as democratic spaces, offering access to knowledge and information regardless of users' economic backgrounds. However, their establishment, maintenance, and growth involve significant economic considerations. This paper explores the economic aspects of libraries from various perspectives, including funding and budgeting, cost benefit analysis, their economic value to society, resource allocation, and the impact of digitization on the economic models of library services.

By utilizing both qualitative and quantitative insights from previous studies, this paper identifies the challenges and opportunities libraries encounter amidst limited funding, the need for economic justification, and the increasing shift toward digital resources. The study concludes with proposed strategies for developing sustainable economic models for libraries, particularly in developing countries. It emphasizes the importance of advocacy and policy support in ensuring the long-term economic viability of libraries.
