Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS). Libraries across the world are increasingly adopting AI-based tools and technologies to improve information retrieval, automate routine operations, enhance user experience, and support decision-making processes. This review paper examines the role of AI tools in modern libraries and explores their applications in cataloguing, classification, reference services, digital preservation, information retrieval, collection management, user services, and research support. The study also highlights the growing integration of machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, expert systems, and chatbots in library environments. In addition, the paper discusses the benefits, challenges, ethical concerns, and future trends associated with AI implementation in libraries. Several Indian and international case studies are included to demonstrate practical applications of AI in academic, public, and digital libraries. The findings reveal that AI technologies are reshaping library services by improving efficiency, personalization, accessibility, and resource management. However, challenges such as a lack of technical expertise, financial limitations, privacy concerns, and ethical issues continue to affect large-scale adoption. The study concludes that AI should be viewed as a supportive technology that enhances the role of librarians rather than replacing them. Continuous training, policy development, infrastructure improvement, and responsible AI governance are essential for the successful integration of AI tools in libraries.
