Abstract

This study examines the research productivity and scholarly impact of four state universities of Assam — Gauhati University (GU), Dibrugarh University (DU), Assam Agricultural University (AAU), and Bodoland University (BU) during 2015-2024 using a scientometric approach. Bibliographic data were collected from the Scopus database on December 9, 2025, via institutional affiliation ID. Out of 26 state universities in Assam, this study focuses only four university. Dataset were extracted from Scopus database. It was analysed using MS-Excel, VOSViewer (1.6.20) and Bibliometrix (R package), focusing on annual publication output, citation counts, h-index, gindex, prolific authors, source preferences and country collaboration. Results showed continuous growth in research output, with GU leading (4,862 publications, 66,945 citations), followed by DU (2474 publications, 32,699 citations), AAU (1697 publications, 13,793 citations), and BU (520 publications & 5,861 citations). Impact indicators, including h- and g-indices, were highest for GU (h-index: 89, g-index :126). In case of the preferred source, disciplinary focus varied: GU favoured physics journals, AAU focused on agricultural research, and Dibrugarh University took a multidisciplinary approach. International collaboration was led by Turkey (GU), China (DU), and the United States (AAU and BU). The study highlights expanding research productivity, though disparities in impact and collaboration persist, underscoring the need for enhanced interdisciplinary and international efforts. Despite growing interest in scientometric studies, limited research has been conducted on the performance of Assam's state universities using recent Scopus-indexed data.
