The institutions in specific and the generations in general flourish on the able support of the libraries and their collections in the use and subsequent growth of the knowledge. This study is aimed, To Study the different areas of library automation in engineering college libraries in Karnataka; To Study the nature and type of software including open source software (OSS) using in engineering college libraries Karnataka and to Study the areas of application of open source software in Engineering college libraries of Karnataka. The investigation has conducted a survey among 147 engineering college librarians in the state of Karnataka on the above matters. The results are discussed under the categories such as Status of Library Automation, Use of Commercial Library Automation Software, Reasons for choosing the Open Source Software (OSS), OSS Installation and Staff Knowledge, Library Facilities provided, Use of OSS, Reasons for the use of OSS, Advantages of OSS, Areas of Library Automation, Application of OSS in engineering college library services and Satisfaction by using OSS Library Software.
