Abstract

The effect of teaching on habit and pathology of gum/teeth in fifth standard of MCD primary school children.

Cross sectional study.

This study has been carried out in two MCD primary schools (morning and evening shifts) in the age group of 9–15 years of both sex of Zakir Nagar and Okhla village, Jamia Nagar, New Delhi, India. The Data was collected in 180 children in two stages, in the pre-teaching assessment by WHO structured questionnaire in local language. At the end of 30 days in post teaching assessment with same questionnaire was done after providing dental health education.

The knowledge about gum bleeding indicates inflamed gums, use of Vit C can prevent gum bleeding and carious teeth can affect teeth appearance were 37.22%, 14.44% and 31.67% in pre teaching assessment respectively while 94.44%, 86.11% and 90.56% were in post teaching assessment respectively. The irregular brushing cause tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath and strains on teeth dental problem is due to eating sweets and ice cream, irregular brushing, not properly rinsing mouth and no regular visit to dentist can create the dental problems, regular cleaning of mouth can prevent dental diseases by avoiding stick of food, regular cleaning of teeth and gum. Regular cleaning of mouth can prevent bleeding & loosening of the gums, loss of teeth and bad breath. Brushing teeth prevent teeth decay were 16.67%, 14.44%, 21.67%, 27.22% and 81.67% in pre teaching assessment respectively while 86.11%, 87.22%, 88.33%, 91.67% and 100% were in post teaching assessment respectively.

There is significant improvement in the habit and knowledge by teaching about pathology of gum/teeth in the children by teaching.
