Abstract

A well written research proposal is the foundation of quality research. It is the key to get acceptance in reputed universities for PhD and Masters Programmes and smooth sailing in institutional internal review or ethical review process. It also gives an edge to secure funding from various agencies where budget is shrinking and competition is increasing. This means that researchers, students and young faculty must acquire proposal writing skills early in their career. The present paper briefly covers various components of a research proposal starting from the preparatory stage to planning, writing and submission. The important elements to a good proposal are emphasised in each section with examples. This paper intends to be a starting point for students and young faculty. It does not substitute the standard guidelines by established research institutions, funding agencies and universities.
