Abstract

Sufoof-e-mohazzil (SEM) is a traditional Unani formulation used therapeutically in the treatment of Saman-e-Mufrat (Obesity). It is a powdered poly herbal preparation of seven single Unani Medicine.

The objective of this research study is an attempt to develop the quality standards of Safoof-e-Mohazzil.

The quality standards of SEM were developed as per guidelines of WHO including Heavy Metals, Microbial Load, Aflatoxins, Pesticides.

The parameters of standardisation showed Total Ash (9.725 ± 0.998), Acid Insoluble Ash (1.95 ± 0.10), Water Soluble Ash (2.8 ± 0.05), Alcohol Soluble Extractive (14.13±0.770), Petroleum Ether Extractive (13.365±0.245), Chloroform Soluble Extractive (6.56±2.5), Acetone Soluble Extractive (2.945±0.689), Loss On Drying (11.45 ± 0.42), pH-value for 1% (5.863) and 10% (5.706 (10% Solution), solutions at 25±2°C, Heavy Metals Residue, Pesticides Residue, Aflatoxins, Microbial Load comply with the standard official limits.

Findings of the present work can be used as a standard monograph for evaluation and identification of other such formulation, and also as reference standard parameters to evaluate the quality control in herbal industries and to overcome batch to batch variation in traditional preparations.
