Abstract

Corrosion mitigation can be tackled in holistic manner only when it is regarded as an active interaction of the surface with the environment - the chemical interaction, mechanical, electrical, thermal, and many other interactions. The success of surface engineering lies in how best we direct, indirect, or modify this interaction and optimise the corrosion performance. In this sense, materials and their characteristics, processes and their characteristics and variety of these two entities have come into play to enhance the corrosion performance of the surface. One type of interaction itself is affected by other interactions. For example, chemical interaction itself is influenced by or modified by mechanical processes and interaction, electrical interaction, optical and thermal interaction - such as transmission or reflection and many others and all of them today are being exploited to increase the resistance of the surface to corrosion. Another shift that is noticeable is that when we approach to modify surfaces to fight corrosion, it is not only corrosion resistance that is aimed at but a host of other surface characteristics that we want to improve, like wear, tear, adhesion, reflection, and many others. Corrosion is thus just one of a host of factors that is considered as part of the integrated view of enhancing the performance of the surface. The topics has been reviewed to a greater extent with relevant literature accumulated recently over a period of time.
