Smelting reduction of iron ore - An optimum approach

Abstract

Most of the smelting reduction processes involve the removal of oxygen from the iron ore in the solid state followed by further removal of remaining oxygen in liquid phase. Efforts are continued to develop smelting reduction processes in which a substantial part of the reduction takes place in the liquid state. Based on mass and heat balances, an attempt has been made to optimize the process parameters namely (i) the degree of post combustion and heat transfer efficiency for single stage and (ii) degree of post combustion and pre-reduction for the two stage smelting reduction processes. An attempt has been made to optimize the degree of post combustion and heat transfer efficiency in the case of single stage smelting reduction process and the degree of post combustion and pre reduction in the case of two stage smelting reduction process.
