Nickel coated aluminium electrode – A sensor for the voltammetric analysis of crystal violet

Abstract

Synthetic dyes and pigments are mainly used in the textile industry. The presence of these dyes in effluent can be a considerable problem. So, detection, identification and degradation of these dyes are very important areas of study. The present analytical detection techniques use various kinds of modified platinum and carbon electrodes, which are costlier and difficult to fabricate. So attempts were made to use a cheap and best electrode, which can compete with the existing traditional electrodes. In the present work, nickel coated aluminium electrode (NCA) was used for the detection of crystal violet dye. The electrochemical behaviour of NCA electrode for the determination of crystal violet by cyclic voltammetry has been studied. The conditions for the detection of crystal violet were arrived at. Interference of other metal ions was also studied. The detection limit was 7.35×10−12 M. A linear calibration graph was obtained from 2.45×10−09 to 7.35×10−11 M of crystal violet at pH 9.0.
