A study was conducted on the occurrence of Salmonella in chicken meat sold in Puducherry. Out of 100 collected from retail outlets samples eight (8%) were positive on cultural biochemical test. Among the eight isolates five (62.5%) were found to carry the virulence spvC gene. The serotype isolated from chicken meat in Puducherry region was found to be Salmonella Typhimurium 4, 12: i: 1, 2. The study indicates that there is an urgent need for educating the butchers regarding the significance of Salmonellosis and its public health importance and to impart training regarding the clean meat production.
