Breast feeding practices were determined in 100 Resident Doctors, 200 employed nurses and were compared with control group of non-employed women belonging to upper socio-economic class. Infants of resident doctors, nurses and control group women were totally breast fed for 2.47, 3.34 & 3.02 months respectively. Average duration of postpartum amenorrhoea was less than 2 months in all three study groups. While decent crèche at working sites and extended maternity leave possibly can ensure longer and effective breast feeding in health professionals, psyche of non-employed, upper class women for not breast feeding their infant for longer time can not be understood.
