Neonatal infections are the major cause of neonatal mortality in both hospital as well as community settings. The management of these infections are being complicated by emergence of antibiotic resistance. Multi drug resistant bacteria are increasingly being reported from intensive care units as well as community. The sensitivity patterns of these organisms determine the antibiotic management. This study analyzes the antibiotic resistance pattern of organisms reported from various centers of the country collected as a part of National Neonatal Perinatal Database (NNPD).
The data was collected prospectively during year 1995, year 2000 and year 2002–03. Organisms causing the neonatal sepsis and their antibiotic resistance pattern were analyzed in this study. The trend of antibiotic resistance pattern is presented here.
Klebsiella and Staphylococcus aureus were the leading causes of sepsis during all the study periods. A significant resistance to cephalosporins and aminoglycosides is seen. Vancomycin resistance is also increasing among Staphylococcus aureus.
Resistance to commonly used antibiotics is increasing. Establishment of appropriate rational antibiotic policy is essential to control this growing problem. There is an urgent need to do longitudinal surveillance of the microbal flora in every hospital.
