Group A beta hemolytic streptococcal osteomyelitis in a neonate

A 40 days old baby was admitted with the diagnosis of osteomyelitis (OM). Pus cultured grew group A Beta Hemolytic Streptococci (GABHS). Drainage of pus and dministration of broad-spectrum antibiotics was followed by a gradual recovery. GABHS is a less common cause of the neonatal OM. GABHS is increasingly being recognized as a cause of significant morbidity and it has been found to respond well to crystalline penicillin with/without clindamycin.
