Neonatal seizures are a common problem. They are highly associated with infant mortality and later morbidity. Improving the care of these infants, both immediately after the diagnosis and subsequently in the outpatient period, will have a major impact on a lifetime of potential morbidity. Yet it is not clear how much impact current treatments have on later outcome. This review attempts to discuss what we know of the epidemiology of neonatal seizures, the current treatment strategies and their effectiveness. There is much that we still do not know about these seizures and their impact on later development, in part because accurate diagnosis of neonatal seizures remains a challenge.
