Abstract

Pain in the neonate can be a major problem, not only for the neonate who experiences it, but also for the health care team in assessing the infant's pain and acting appropriately to resolve it. The experiences of pain the neonates suffer can be traumatic and there is concern about whether enough is done to relieve this suffering and if more can be done to provide comfort to these infants. Neonatal pain can be assessed by standardized pain scales. Various therapies both pharmacological and non-pharmacological exist and need to be implemented efficiently and effectively by the neonatal care providers which may prevent later problems.
