Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered a useful complementary tool in the imaging work-up of antenatal and perinatal congenital anomalies. The role of MRI is not only to confirm or exclude possible lesions but also to define their full extent, aiding in their characterization, and to demonstrate associated abnormalities. Accurate diagnosis of anomalies by MRI has the potential to improve parental counseling regarding prognosis and treatment options, assist clinicians with fetal and postnatal management decisions, and plan delivery at an appropriate center for treating the diagnosed anomaly. This review summarizes the use of fetal and neonatal MRI in the evaluation of congenital anomalies and shows how MRI can provide significant additional information compared to ultrasound.
