Effectiveness of planned teaching programme on knowledge of nurses regarding psychiatric emergencies in selected hospitals at Mangalore

During the course of practice, a mental health nurse has to face various psychiatric emergencies like Suicide, Agitated and Violent patients, Panic attacks, Catatonic stupor etc. This study attempts to evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on knowledge of nurses regarding psychiatric emergencies. A Pre experimental one group pre test post test design was adopted and the data was collected from 50 nurses selected by purposive sampling method. The results shows that there is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test knowledge scores. (t=10.03, p<0.01). Planned teaching a simple and effective method in improving knowledge of nurses regarding psychiatric emergencies which will in turn help in prevention and management of psychiatric emergencies.
