Coconut Water Mediated Multiplication of Cymbidium Showgirl Cooks Bridge in Vitro

Coconut water (CW) is the liquid endosperm of Cocos nucifera comprises mainly inorganic ions, nitrogenous compounds, vitamins, sugars, amino acids and related substances besides beings rich in plant hormones (auxin, 1, 3-diphynyl urea, cytokinins and gibbberellins), that can enhance the growth of tissue or organ in vitro. Protocorms regenerated in vitro from shoot meristem of Cymbidium Showgirl Cooksbridge were tested for in vitro proliferation in six widely used basal media e.g., Murashige and Skoog, Nitsch, Gamborg, Knudson C, Street and White, incorporated with, 0, 100 and 200 ml/1 coconut water. Among the media, maximum number of protocorms was formed in Knudson C, while CW at 200 ml/1 produced highest number of protocorms, shoots and roots. The days for attain three leaves stage was less in Street with 200 ml/1 of CW, further roots also induced early. The response was poor with regard to all the characters under study in media devoid of coconut water.
