Abstract

A study was carried out to investigate the effect of growth regulators and growing media on bulblet formation in Lilium hybrids cultivars Pollyanna and Parto. Scales were taken from the bulbs harvested in the last week of August without giving any cold treatment. Five scales were selected randomonly and soaked in 200, 500, 600 and 1000 ppm each of IBA and NAA for an hour and they were put into the sand and coco peat in three replications in factorial complete rendomized design. Analysis of data revealed that IBA 200 ppm produced more number of bulblets (3.6) with sand. Maximum (4.3) number of bulblets in sand with IBA 200 ppm recorded in cv. Prato. The weight of bulblets (0.7g), diameter of bulblets (0.8 cm), number of roots (3.3) and root length (7.7 cm) were also recorded maximum in cv. Prato in coca peat. IBA 200 ppm and 500 ppm produced maximum weight (l.lg) and diameter (1.0 cm) of bulblets in sand. The maximum weight (1.8 g) and diameter (1.2 cm) was recorded in cv. Pollyanna with IBA 200 ppm and NAA 200 ppm in sand. Number of roots was recorded more (5.8) in both the cultivars in coco peat with IBA 500 and 1000 ppm. The root length was recorded maximum (15.0 cm) in cv. Prato with coco peat. It was concluded that IBA @ 200 ppm and river sand found the best growing medium for in vivo propagation of Lilium through scale.
