Abstract

The present investigation was carried out to study the performance of 12 cultivars of gerbera (Gerbera jamessonii Bolus ex Hooker F.) under open field conditions in Assam. Vegetative, flowering and flower characters varied significantly among the cultivars. The results revealed that the cultivar Pride of Sikkim recorded maximum plant height (43.50cm) and plant spread (65.83 cm). Flower size was also maximum in Pride of Sikkim (10.4cm) followed by Red Gem (9.82cm). The maximum fresh weight of flower was recorded for Pride of Sikkim (4.67g). Maximum values for number of leaves per plant (45.38) and number of suckers per plant were produced by Red Gem (12.66). Highest values for stalk length (42.98cm), vase life (10.00 days) and self-life (13.33 days) was recorded in Red Gem. Maximum number of flowers per plant (26.00) was produced by Red Gem followed by Popular (23.66). Pride of India took minimum days (62.38 days) for appearance of flower bud. Maximum flowering duration was observed in Red Gem (104.56 days).
