Weed dynamics and turf quality response to herbicide based weed management strategies in bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) cv. G2

Abstract

Lawn grass is an essential component of garden landscaping, creating a beautiful, functional, and eco-friendly environment. Proper selection of grass species and regular maintenance ensures a healthy and attractive garden lawn. Lawns enhance the aesthetic beauty of gardens and provide space for recreation, relaxation, and environmental benefits such as cooling and dust control. It provides a lush green background that enhances the beauty of ornamental plants, shrubs, and trees. It also connects different garden components such as flower beds, pathways, fountains, and buildings to build harmony in gardens. Weeds in lawns compete with grass for nutrients, water, sunlight, and space, reducing the aesthetic value and uniformity of the turf. Effective weed management in lawns involves preventive, cultural, mechanical, and chemical control methods. Preventing weed establishment is the most effective strategy. Hence, an experiment was carried out in the Department of Horticulture, Annamalai University to study the influence of various weed control measures along with weedicides on Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) cv. G2 during 2022. In this experiment, effect of eleven weed control treatments involving hand weeding, Glyphosate @ 1.5 a.i kg ha–1, Pyrazosulfuron ethyl @ 35 g a.i. ha–1, Halosulfuron @ 20 g a.i. kg ha–1 and 2, 4-D @ 1.5 kg a.i. ha–1 and using their combinations were tried under RBD with three replications. Among the eleven treatments, the results recorded on weed attributes viz., weed population, weed biomass, weed control index showed significant influence of weed management practices. Application of Glyphosate @ 1.5 kg a.i. ha–1 + Pyrazosulfuron @ 35 g a.i. ha–1 + 2, 4-D @ 1.5 kg a.i. ha–1 controlled weeds efficiently and improved the growth of Bermuda grass cv. G2. It gave good control of grass, broad leaved weeds and sedges.
