Abstract

Extraction and evaluation of essence from the flowers of rose and marigold using two methods, is reported under mid-hills of Western Himalayas. Hydro-distillation and steam-distillation methods of oil extraction significantly affects the yield, PH, ester value, and carbonyl value of the extracted oil. Based on the essential oil properties and yield, hydrodistillation method is adjudged to be the best. Highest mean oil yield (0.37%) was recorded in hydrodistillation, while highest mean pH (5.80), ester value (23.50), ester value after acetylation (136.3) and carbonyl value (24.42%) were recorded in steam-distillation method.
