Cost components for tissue culture medium is cause of a concern for both research and production laboratories. One of the contributing factors for this is the high cost of purified agar. An experiment was conducted to find substitute to agar for anthurium seed germination and subsequent growth. Three different gelling agents at different concentrations and in combination with agar were used. Sago 60 g/1 gave best results and reduction in cost to the extent of four times of agar. Arrow root was found promising but its practical usage restricted due to handling difficulties.
