Abstract

A systematic study on flowering characters of promising flowering tree species in Tarai condition was carried out in and around Pantnagar, Udhamsinghnagar, Uttaranchal to find out the flowering period for effective landscape designing in the region. A total of eighteen common flowering trees were studied year round for their duration of flowering, peak flowering month and flower colour. Among the flowering trees Cassia siamia was found to flower for longest period (74 days) followed by Delonix regia (66 days). The tree Grevillea robusta flowered only for 26 days. However, most of the trees were in peak flowering condition between March to June. A few trees were observed in peak flowering condition in the months of February and October. In the other months of the year, none of the trees were found in their much flowering effect The trees Delonix regia and Cassia nodosa contributed mass effect in peak flowering condition in the landscape for maximum period of 40 and 38 days respectively. The common flower colour ranged between red, yellow and white.
