Abstract

This study was conducted to assess if body mass index and waist circumference were associated with chronic periodontitis in a representative male population of young Indian adults.

Our study included 500 non-diabetic male subjects, aged 20–28 years. All the subjects were examined for periodontal status, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). The community periodontal index was used to assess periodontal status. Subjects with a community periodontal index score of 0–2 were considered as controls and those with a community periodontal index score of >2 were considered to have periodontitis. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association of periodontitis with BMI and WC.

BMI and waist circumference were found to be positively associated with periodontitis. Increased risk of periodontitis was noted for each 1.5 kg/m2 increase in the body mass index (adjusted odds ratio, 1.05 [95% confidence interval, 0.97 1.02]). Similarly, increased risk of periodontal disease was found per 7.0 cm increase in waist circumference (adjusted odds ratio, 1.04 [95% confidence interval, 0.99 1.04]).

Higher body mass index and increased waist circumference could be a potential risk factor for periodontitis among young Indian males.
