The purpose of the study is to assess the prevalence of caries and periodontal disease amongst adult population in deprived district of Karachi.
A cross sectional study comprising of 500 patients was carried out in Out Patient Department of Baqai Dental College. Both male and female patients seeking dental treatment from age 18–35 years were included in the study. A predesigned WHO questionnaire for clinical assessment of caries and periodontal diseases was used in this survey to keep the record of the data. Data was analyzed by using SPSS version 19. Chi- square test was performed to compare the prevalence of Dental caries between urban and rural populations. p- value was set at 0.05.
Dental caries were present in 221 patients from rural areas and 198 patients from urban locality. Periodontitis was reported in 220 patients from rural areas and 193 patients from urban locality.
The present study concludes that there is a need to provide oral health care services in rural areas of Karachi.
