The selection of teeth for edentulous subjects is one of the most important and difficult tasks faced by dental practitioners. In order to achieve a more pleasing and natural look in complete denture individuals, characteristics such as sex, personality and age are to be taken into account. This study was done to comparative analyze two different populations in terms of the relationship between dimensions of maxillary anterior teeth and various anthropomorphic facial landmarks. It was evaluated whether these relationships could help in selection of artificial teeth.
The study comprised of 120 subjects, 60 each from North and North East India, residing in the city of Lucknow. The two racial groups consisted of 30 males and females each in the age group of 20–25 years. The anthorpomorphic facial landmarks compared included bizygomatic, interalar, intercanine and combined width of all maxillary anterior teeth.
Statistical analysis was done by unpaired student ‘t’ test, mean SE and SD was calculated, value of ‘t’ at 58° of freedom with 1% reliability.
Anthropomorphic measurements varied greatly for different population groups. Standard measurements or ratios may therefore result in unsatisfactory esthetic outcome. Specific anthropometric ratios need to be developed for individual populations.
