The concept of present study is to find out the alterations in lipid profile in normal and diabetic patients during pregnancy. Four groups of subjects, Group A - healthy non-pregnant women without diabetes (Control), Group B - non-pregnant women with diabetes, Group C - pregnant women without diabetes and Group D - pregnant women with diabetes in the third trimester of pregnancy, were investigated for serum lipid profile. There was a significant increase in LDL and VLDL cholesterol levels and significant decrease in the HDL cholesterol level in pregnant subjects as compared to the diabetic non-pregnant subjects. However, no significant change was observed in total cholesterol and triglyceride during pregnancy in subjects as compared to the diabetic non-pregnant subjects. The maximum level of triglyceride, LDL and VLDL were observed in pregnant subjects suffering from diabetes. In our findings, the elevation of ratio of LDL/HDL and TG/HDL was also observed during pregnancy in diabetic as well as non-diabetic patients.
