To determine the prevalence of oral lichen planus (OLP) in population of patients with diabetes mellitus compared with a control population.
A total of 196 patients over the age of 35 years, who were diagnosed as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and identical number of age, gender and race – matched controls, were examined for clinical evidence of OLP. Patients with diabetes mellitus of any other type were excluded from control group.
Nine diabetic patients (4.6%) and six control patients (3.1%) had clinical evidence of OLP. There was no overall difference between the diabetic and non-diabetic patients with lichen planus (P = 0.430) and no statistically significant difference in terms of gender, race and age.
