Hand wrist (HW) radiographs and cervical skeletal maturity stages (CS) are considered as most reliable skeletal maturity indicators (SMIs). Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) had been evaluated as SMIs by correlating them with HW and CS individually. The aim of the study was to find out the correlation of IGF-1 levels with both HW and CS in the same subjects.
A blood spot sample was collected from 107 subjects (age range 5-25 years) and radio immunoassayed for IGF-1 levels. HW radiographs and lateral cephalograms were obtained. Subjects were classified into six groups on the basis of Hassel and Farman criteria, and into five groups on the basis of Fishman’s mandibular growth-increment data. Analysis of variance, post-hoc tests and Pearson’s correlation coefficient were used for analysis of data.
Mean blood spot IGF-I levels increased gradually from CS1 to CS4 with a steep increase from CS4 to CS5 and a decline thereafter at CS6. Mean blood spot IGF-I levels increased gradually from HW1 to HW2, with a steep increase from HW2 to HW3 and a decline from HW3 to HW5. The peak IGF-1 levels were seen at HW3 and CS5.
Blood spot IGF-1 levels can act as reliable SMIs as they are well correlated to both cervical vertebrae maturity indicators and HW SMIs.
