Comparative study of opioid and non opioid analgesics in post operative pain control

Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the analgesic efficacy of oral tramadol hydrochloride (opioid) and oral Ketorolac tromethamine (non opioid) for preventing pain after third molar surgery.

Forty patients undergoing elective surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars in an out patient setting participated in the present study. The patients were divided into two groups of 20 each arbitrarily to facilitate a double blind clinical trial. An independent investigator prescribed the drug directly to both groupI & group II. The dosage used is Kotorolac tromethamine 10mg one tid for group I and tramadol hydrochloride 50 mg one tid for groupie. Assessment of post operative pain is done by using visual analogue scale and verbal rating scale at 24 (4), 48 (h) and 72(h) for both group I and group II patients.

GroupI—The VAS score after 24hrs ranged from 10 to 30 with a mean of 20.6.After 48hrs—VAS ranged from 5 to 25 with mean score of 15.3, After 72hrsVAS ranged from 5 to 20 with mean score of 11.7. GroupII The VAS score after 24hrs ranged from 5 to 24 with a mean score of 13.2, After 48hrs VAS ranged from5 to 15 with a mean score of 7.9, After 72 hrs VAS ranged from 4 to 10 with a mean score of 5.5

Tramadol hydrochloride is superior in controlling post operative pain in comparison to Ketorolac tromethamine with faster onset and prolonged duration of action.
