Asymptomatic expansion of upper and lower jaws in a 5 year old patient: a case report

A 5 yearold male reported to our department with asymptomatic expansion of upper and lower jaws. Clinical findings were carefully noted. The patient had significant swelling of the face that agrees with the clinical aspects of cherubism. A full mouth radiological survey in the form of IOPA X Ray was made. A digital skiagram of AP and Lateral skull views were taken. CT evaluation of both the jaws was done to know the exact extent and type of lesion and to confirm the bilateral involvement of both the jaws. Patient was later sent for some laboratory investigations. An incisional biopsy was finally taken and the specimen was sent for histopathological examination which revealed numerous multinucleated giant cells associated with perivascular cuffing. Based on clinical, radiological, laboratory and histopathological examination a final diagnosis of cherubism was made. The purpose of this case report is to emphasize the importance of imaging especially CT scan in diagnosis and estimating the exact extent of such lesions.
