Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging treatment procedure that employs the interaction of three components: light, photosensitizer, and oxygen resulting in the formation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species which cause damage to various components of the pathogenic bacterial cells. Several studies have been done based on PDT in the past two decades showing promising results. PDT appears to have benefits compared to conventional therapy as it is safe, inexpensive and does not require patient compliance. Several studies have been done in the past two decades focusing on the use of PDT for the management of infections, including periodontitis. This article aims to briefly review the application of PDT in the treatment of periodontitis.
