Abstract

Women health issues have come to the forefront of medical research only within the last decade. Health needs of women, at all ages, require special attention because of the distinct changes that occur over a women's lifetime. Hormonal fluctuations not only affect a woman's reproductive system but also have a surprisingly strong influence on the oral cavity. Puberty, menses, pregnancy, menopause and oral contraceptives all influence women oral health and also the way in which a dentist should approach their treatment. This paper will review each of those parts of a woman's life when hormonal fluctuations may affect the oral tissues and how to care specifically for the female patient in the dental office.
