Prevalence of burning mouth symptoms in middle aged and elderly postmenopausal women: A clinical research

There are diverse variety of patients that visit a Dental hospital of which some have direct visible complaints for which they seek treatment and another subset of patients have no visible lesions but have varied ailments. One of such problems is the complaint of burning sensation in all age groups especially in middle and elderly aged postmenopausal women. This subset of patients poses a challenge to the diagnostic world as to treating their problem. The etiopathogenesis of burning mouth is complex and diverse as nutritional, infective, metabolic and psychological factors play a key role in many patients. Burning sensation can be a very distressful condition especially when its etiology cannot be elucidated. Particularly in women there are reported age related hormonal changes after menopause which aggravates the problem. Moreover as one ages the mucosa becomes thinner and drier, so complains such as burning and dryness. This research is an effort to determine the prevalence of burning mouth symptom, in the population of middle and elderly aged postmenopausal women.
