The aim of this study is to assess signs and symptoms associated and the discomfort noted during any functional movement in patients with temporomandibular joint internal derangement.
The study designed to collect the sample from out patient department of Oral medicine and radiology at Government dental college, Bangalore. Patients with pain, clicking, deviation and tenderness were included in the study as symptomatic group and their etiology, discomfort while performing routine functions and mouth opening with pain and without pain during central, lateral and protrussive movement of the jaw were recorded The Asymptomatic group was free from any symptoms.
A total of 100 consecutive patients (50-Symptomatic, 50-Asymptomatic) between the age group of 16 to 50yrs (with Mean age ±28yrs.) were selected.
The number of female (64%) in our study group was more than males (36%) with mean age of ±28yrs. The asymptomatic and symptomatic both group of patient's age and sex was matched. The maximum occurrences of TMJ internal derangement were due to other reasons (Occlusion, Skeletal deformity or Deep slope of articular eminence) in both male and females. And 12(75%) females had all the symptoms (pain, click, deviation, tenderness over TMJ area and dysfunction) related to TMJ internal derangement than males 4(25%). The maximum patients had discomfort while chewing, yawning and due to other reasons (Brushing and protrussive movements) which they had during performing daily activities.
Internal derangement occurs in up to 28% of the adult population. Despite the prevalence of these disorders, it has been poorly understood and investigated. This article attempts to enlighten the signs and symptoms and the discomfort noted in these group of patients which further helps to manage these patients through conservative modalities in a better way.
