Stem cells have been successfully isolated from a variety of human tissues including dentofacial tissues. Recent advances in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine have presented opportunities for tissue engineering as well as gene based approaches in periodontal therapy. Stem cells offer new potential to treat diseases, to screen new drugs in labor atory and to develop model systems to study normal growth and identify the causes of birth defects. The present article reviews the various characteristics of stem cells & their applications in orofacial regeneration.
