Abstract

The use of autofluorescence imaging in the evaluation of various epithelial malignancies is rapidly evolving in the recent times. Many reports were published in the literature explaining its applications in dentistry but very few literature is provided explaining its potential benefits in the screening of benign, pre-malignant and malignant lesions of the oralmucosa so that it can be incorporated as a chair side diagnostic modality in the clinical practice for in-vivo screening of the suspicious lesions.

The present study offers a literature review on the autofluorescence imaging and an update on its applications in the diagnosis of pre-malignant lesions and oral cancer. Materials and methods: A google search was conducted of the literature using the keywords: autofluorescence imaging, endogenous fluorophores, diagnosic tools of pre- malignant lesions and oral cancer.

Results and Discussion include the basics, history and improvements in the field of autofluorescence imaging techniques along with a brief note on the research activities highlithing its role in the diagnosis of pre-malignant lesions and oral cancer.

Autofluorescence imaging has a promising role in the screening of pre-malignant lesions and oral cancer and can be incorporated as a chairside diagnostic modality in routine clinical practice.
