Placement of prosthesis in oral cavity produces profound changes of the oral environment that may have an adverse effect on the integrity of oral tissues. Mucosal reactions could result from mechanical irritation by the prosthesis, accumulation of microbial plaque on the prosthesis and occasionally by toxic or allergic reaction to constituents of the denture material. Aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of common oral mucosal alterations in patients wearing oral prostheses.
A total of 100 patients (53 males & 47 females) who were wearing oral prostheses (orthodontic appliances, complete dentures, fixed partial dentures, removable partial dentures, implants) were randomly selected of OPD of a dental hospital in Mathura city (India).The prevalence of oral mucosal alterations in total sample population and among removable & fixed appliance wearers was obtained. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software version 11.0.
Traumatic ulcers & Periodontal diseases accounted to be most prevalent i.e. 18%. Denture sore mouth was the most prevalent (17.9%) among removable appliance wearers & traumatic ulcers were most prevalent (35.1%) in patients on fixed appliances.
The findings observed are important to be considered when clinically evaluating oral soft tissue in prosthesis wearers. Close follow up and systematic evaluation is required in this group of patients.
